Subaru has patented the BRZ STI body we saw at the New York Auto Show earlier this year. The (obviously) World Rally Blue BRZ STI looked like a typical STI car with Subaru’s hallmark picnic table spoiler. Now pictures from Subaru’s patent filing in Japan show that the production BRZ STI will look almost exactly like the concept.
The front fascia, side skirts, rear valence, center mounted exhaust, and even the BBS CH-R wheels made it into the patent filing. The only visible difference between the concept car and the patent filing drawings is the scaffolding for the aforementioned skyscraping spoiler.
The patent doesn’t include and underhood pictures, so there still isn’t confirmation, but eventually Subaru will get off their butts and release a turbo BRZ STI. Of course that will require an admission that the chassis can handle more than 200 horsepower, which they’ve maintained it can’t, but there’s no shortage of evidence in the form of 500 horsepower to 1,000 horsepower cars that aren’t twisting like pretzels from the torque.
We know that a BRZ STI is on the way, but we don’t know for sure about a factory turbocharger. Would you buy a BRZ STI without a turbo? Would you consider it a real STI car without one?

Subaru is getting hyperactive with small changes to keep people excited about the BRZ. And it’s working, the Hyper Blue 2016 BRZ was on display at the Wicked Big Meet and it looks awesome. If you’re holding out for a BRZ that’s unique and definitely turns heads right off the showroom floor, this is it.
The Hyper Blue BRZ was shown off with black logos and color matched seat stitching which might point to a special edition. Could this new paint be specific to the 2016 BRZ Series.Blue?
The Hyper Blue color was only shown on the WRX STI and the BRZ, so it could be reserved for special editions. but it would fit well on the WRX and Crosstrek too. Don’t hold your breath for the two-tone tan and Hyper Blue Outback though.
You know you want to see an orange racing stripe on the Hyper Blue BRZ to make a Gulf Racing livery homage, don’t lie.
Is the Hyper Blue addition a desperate attempt to keep people interested in the aging first gen while Subaru focuses on building the second generation BRZ? Or are they just giving the customers what they want with sportier color option for 2016?

A Subaru BRZ STI has been officially released by Subaru. Of course it’s only a concept car for the New York Auto Show, but it shows that Subaru has been listening to everyone begging for a more powerful BRZ. The concept car also shows that there might be hope for a real BRZ STI at some point in the future. The BRZ STI concept is a lot more impressive than the BRZ tS STI that Japan will get next year with… exactly the same horsepower as the standard Subaru BRZ, it packs a race ready engine.
No, the US Subaru BRZ STI doesn’t have a turbo FA20, it’s actually an NA EJ20 from a Super GT car according to Road & Track. That means that even the concept car builders at Subaru are keeping to the official party line that “the BRZ doesn’t need forced induction, it’s fast enough as is.”
The concept BRZ STI has a huge rear wing, carbon fiber diffuser with center exit exhaust, a full bodykit, a lowered suspension and rims that look an awful lot like BBS’ offerings, and some interior trim pieces.
The BRZ STI does have some aero upgrades and a better suspension than the stock car, but the lack of a turbo seems to indicate that any US BRZ STI will just be a special body kit, maybe a goofy wing, and some stiffer struts and shocks.
It looks like we’ll have to wait for the second generation BRZ for a more impressive BRZ STI.

Subaru is finally releasing a BRZ STI. If that sentence conjures dreams of turbos and hood scoops and AWD donuts, it’s time to wake up.
The BRZ STI won’t have any more power. Unfortunately the BRZ STI will only be another tweaking of the standard BRZ like the BRZ Series.Blue, the FR-S Release Series 1.0, or the BRZ tS.
“That’s not what this car is about. We feel this car has enough power” a Subaru rep said, carefully toeing the company line. “It’s all about elevating the car’s already great cornering capability. That’s what drivers want, an ultimate connection with the road. And our job is to develop parts that reach this goal.”
Instead, the 2015 Subaru BRZ tS STI (yes Subaru does still love tacking on extra nonsensical letters, at least they haven’t lost that) will get new Bilstein struts, drilled brake rotors, a flexible V bar style strut tower brace, a new muffler, unique 18-inch wheels, Recaro seats and a unique lip kit. The price for all this will come out to 4,000,000 yen, or about $33,000 US. So at least the original JDM BRZ STI won’t cost you too much.
There’s always hope for a real BRZ STI on the second generation BRZ.
The Tokyo Auto Salon is one of the largest car shows for Japanese brands. Both aftermarket and OEM suppliers go all out for the Salon every year, and Subaru is no exception. This year, Subaru unveiled the 2015 Subaru BRZ GT300 race car, which will compete in Japan’s Super GT series.
The BRZ GT300 race car is barely recognizable as a BRZ. It’s wide (it makes the Rocket Bunny kit look like a Tango), it’s low and it has a massive spoiler on the back. Still, it’s a lot better than the NASCAR bodies that are essentially all the same with different headlights and grills painted on. At least the BRZ GT300 looks like it started out life as a BRZ.
Subaru also debuted their WRX STI based race car that will be competing in the Nurburgring 24 Hour race with grill mounted lights that make the front of the car look like a Mustang (head over to Autoblog to see the monstrosity and then try to tell me you don’t see the stang in it).
Subaru will use the same Dunlop tires on the BRZ GT300 and the Nurburgring 24 Hours STI.
The Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ have been confirmed for a second generation. The Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ have been hits for both companies, but the fate of the boxer engined sports car was in question, partially because of Toyota’s insistence on new body styles, a convertible model most importantly, and Subaru’s reluctance to build anything but the original coupe.
Now Toyota has confirmed that the 2nd generation of the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ (and the Toyota GT86 as it’s known in many parts of the world), citing the company’s need for sporty cars to rejuvenate its image.
“we are pretty serious about keeping the GT 86 pure and keeping a car like that in our line-up. Because in the past we dropped cars like the Celicas and fun cars, and we don’t want to lose that again,” said Karl Schlicht, Toyota of Europe’s Executive Vice President told Motoring.com.au. “It hurts the image over time, we want to keep some fun cars in our line-up.”
Despite recent unsourced reports to the contrary, the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ will live into another generation. This opens the door to the possibility of Supra built off the FR-S platform. Since Toyota is planning a higher end sports car with BMW power, it would be simple to build the FR-S platform with enough engine bay space to accommodate an in inline six (the current car has proven pretty accepting of larger motors, as all those 2JZ FR-S builds and V8 swaps have proven).
Australians get all the good stuff. Kangaroos, The Great Barrier Reef, video games that are somehow special enough to warrant a 300% price hike, Steve Irwin, Turbo Nissans/ Holdens/ Fords, and now a retro special edition Scion FR-S.
The limited edition BRZ, imaginatively named the 2015 Subaru BRZ Special Edition, will come with unique racing stripes, unique 17-inch wheels (remember when those were considered big? it was a simpler time), a black lip kit, an STI push button starter, a short shift kit, and a unique shift knob. Subaru Australia claims the 2015 BRZ Special Edition adds $9,000 worth of upgrades for a $3,500 premium. Only 125 of the BRZ Special Editions will be sold in Australia, so if you’re interested move quick.
By now you already know the basics of the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ’s genesis – it has a Subaru engine and chassis while the styling was done by Toyota. That’s not the whole story though, and X Car just released a video detailing the whole story behind the joint venture sports car.

The interesting part of the story is that it was Toyota that pushed for the car to be built. Toyota decided they wanted to build a sports car with Subaru and went to the smaller company with the idea. Subaru was hesitant about the project at first so Toyota took the initiative and built a prototype using an engine out of a Subaru Legacy. The car came back to Toyota with bald tires and a resounding yes.
What followed was a bit of Romeo and Juliet style fighting over the details of the engine, but luckily Toyota and Subaru are not the Montagues and Capulets and nobody ended up stabbed or poisoned.

Dai Yoshiro is a D1 drifter who made a name for himself drifting an S13 Silvia. If the drifting world were Halo, the S13 would be the Battle Rifle, it’s the platform you usually start with and it works really well, but its ubiquity makes it a bit boring , so he has now switched to a Subaru BRZ. The Falken drift BRZ was chosen to replace the Silvia because of its style, popularity and size.
The BRZ beat out the 350z and Cadillac CTS-V as the drift car of choice for Yoshiro and his team. Yoshiro said the 350Z lost due to the BRZ’s popularity and marketability and the CTS-V was too long. This is a D1 drift car though, so unless you’re being paid by Scion to keep it, you’re probably going to need to drop the FA20 motor for something with a bit more power. Yoshiro went with a 7.0-liter Chevy LS7 engine swap with a Garrett GTX5008R turbo that makes 962-horsepower and 832 lb-ft of torque at 6,800 rpm.
In addition to the V8 swap, the drift BRZ has a couple aesthetic improvements. Yoshiro’s Falken BRZ drift car has a Rocket Bunny V2 body kit and KW coilovers sitting on Yoshihara Design Champion wheels.

A Subaru BRZ Rally Car Campaigned by Tein is heating up in the All Japan Rally Championship, winning three races in a row. The BRZ rally car, sponsored by Tein and driven by Kamata Takuma, just won the Tango Peninsula Rally 2014, the sixth race of the 2014 season.
The BRZ rally car competes in the JN-5 class, so it isn’t going up against the Subaru Impreza WRX STI and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. Instead, the BRZ competes with other 2WD vehicles like the Honda Integra, Mitsubishi Mirage, Honda Civic, and even a couple Toyota GT86s.
The Tango Peninsula Rally is 63.6 miles (or 4.02677e6 inches according to my coffee-deprived first conversion) split up into 21 stages. Both rain and heat were a factor in the race but the BRZ handled the wet gravel well thanks to its balance and low center of gravity.
It still looks like Toyota will campaign a GT86 rally car before Subaru races a BRZ rally car, but this shows the car’s potential.
