FR-S Midlife Crisis Will Mean Facelift, More Power For 2017

The Scion FR-S will get a mid-cycle update and like so many people who have a midlife crisis, the car will get a facelift and get stronger to try to reclaim its youth. According to Motoring.com.au, the FR-S’ new look will have a larger lower grill, a new hood, new headlights, and a redesigned rear bumper new with the exhaust pushed further out. Oh, and most importantly MORE POWER!

The 2017 FR-S will get an eight horsepower bump to 208. Not enough to really change the car’s driving dynamic or have you hunting Corvettes, but enough that 2017 buyers should be able to edge out owners of earlier cars (unless they’ve been modded, but who would ever do that?).

Sadly, unlike a lot of midlife crisisers, the FR-S won’t get a convertible. Toyota says sales are too low to justify the convertible we’ve been hoping for. Obviously when the buying public grows less enthused about the thing you’re selling, you definitely don’t want to introduce exciting features or upgrades, you want to stay the course.

As I’ve pointed out in the past, Porsche, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and all the other small automakers that can’t afford to completely redesign their models every couple years have figured out the key to selling enthusiast cars without having to compete with the used market for the same car you’re selling: introduce special editions and new bodystyles so that the novelty and exclusivity of the car never wears off. This is a good start, but how much more excited would you be for a 2.5-liter FR-S or an FR-S convertible?

 

 

Scion “Went Down Swinging,” But FR-S Convertible Will Not Be Built

The FR-S convertible is dead. Scion fought for the car and despite Subaru’s veto, Toyota was planning to manufacture the car itself, but there was no market outside the United States that could anticipate sales high enough to justify production.

“So on the convertible we went down swinging,” Scion Senior Vice President Doug Murtha told WardsAuto. I think we were pretty aggressive on our (submitted plan), but we looked at what we would have conceivably lost on the product and said, ‘We’re not going to even push it further.Nobody was more disappointed than we were.”

Scion FR-S sales have been declining steeply, which is to be expected when a car has been around for a couple years, so Scion is looking for something to get buyers interested again. It won’t be a turbo model though, according to Murtha “that’s not something that’s coming.” That technically leave the possibility of a 2.5-liter FR-S though, so there’s still hope for more power For now, Scion is banking on the Release Series 1.0 reawakening the public’s love of the car, or maybe they’ll actually build the FR-S Targa

The car dealers that were shown the convertible FR-S as an incentive to keep their Scion branches open must feel awful, like they were dealing with a company that didn’t care about honesty at all and would say anything to keep them around longer, hoping that the more time they invested, the less likely they were to walk away. So now they know how it feels.

Chew Are Going To Love The Stay Minty FR-S

Custom cars are a purely passionate endeavor. There is no rational reason to spend thousands of dollars on aesthetic mods to a car, nor performance upgrades on a car used for the daily commute, but there is a particular type of person that is still drawn into the expensive, frustrating, unjustifiable and unreciprocated love of cars and against the odds finds happiness there.

Passion can only exist in the absence of reason, and so as car lovers we have to applaud when someone forgoes all reason and delves irrationally deep into the world of customization.

Kendall White is one of those people. He clearly has a passion for his car that goes beyond the simple pleasure of having a good looking automobile in his garage. The owner of the Stay Minty FR-S isn’t a wealthy car collector who had the car built on a lark, he works 6 months away from home at a time to afford his Ahabian quest for the perfect FR-S.

Case in point: I asked Kendall for a little bit of information about himself and the car and his mindset with the build and he sent me back this awesome, expansive story. In addition to building an awesome FR-S, he makes the writer’s job easy. What better way to learn about someone than in their own words?

My name is Kendall White, I was Born and raised in a small area around Taberville Missouri. Don’t try and look for it on a map because you probably won’t find it (laughs). With being from a small town I have a lot of respect for everything that I deal with. Not only do I give respect I get respect in return for being so young in a community that worships custom car builders such as myself. When I was a boy, I started my life out having dreams just like every other small child does. But I felt like my dreams were different. Every time I turned around I found myself into something automotive. It came from a family aspect judging by the preferences that they had in their dreams, I look back and they were all in to cars also. So I do believe my family history had to do a lot with it.

The beginning of my automotive loving days was when I turned seven years old. Not only because of hot wheel cars like everyone else but when I had first got a hold of my first copy of car and driver magazine. That was a big part of my childhood Memory. Imagining myself building and driving the most amazing car’s that there were back in the 90s. Didn’t matter if it was drift, rally, or even stock car racing the point is I was hooked. From then on out I found my calling.

Throughout school it was hard to decide what I wanted to be in life. I had various jobs, such as farming, Industrial and retail, but at that time I was never really interested in anything like that. In Missouri where I was from its very hard to find a job that you can make enough money to build your dream car. From there I decided to join a company that was something new to my liking. It was an oil field job that my family has worked at for decades. Not knowing what I was getting myself into. I went ahead and started right away. Working away from home 6 months at a time is a very hard task to take on but I did it anyways. From My first day at Work up until now I have accomplished a lot. Even my self-saying that I believe it. My career has relocated me to Lumberton Texas where I have settled down and have taken my custom car building to an all-time high.

*In today’s Scene we have multiple types of vehicles, people and personalities. Anywhere you look competition is everywhere. Not like it was when it first started.

*From day one of making my mind up on buying a new concept of vehicle like the Scion FRS I knew I had the build planned before I even sat in the driver’s seat.

June 2012 was a special time of year for me, I pre ordered my Firestorm Scion FRS. I was absolutely excited to see what this new concept of vehicle would be like. With me pre ordering an FRS so early in the year I had to wait Six weeks for it to be delivered, which was the longest wait ever. I still can’t believe that I actually put money down on a car that I never even seen before in person (laughs). It was down to the point where I was calling once a week to see if the dealership knew where it was located at. Six weeks waiting the day was finally here, the dealership called and told me that my car was there to pick up. Was one of the most exciting days ever. My first time approaching the car was a moment to remember. The body lines were perfect for what I was planning on doing with the car.

So the build starts

Knowing that I wanted to build something so perfect into the best show car possible to the best of my ability. I knew that I would have to custom build and design everything. Knowing that a lot of cars were planning on going wide body. I wanted to keep it original, with that being said I wanted something that wouldn’t be overly done but just right. With the FRS body lines you have so much style you can work with. But then again, like I said not overly done. Building a perfect Built to park vehicle is not easy. But I knew I was going to make it easy. At least that’s what I had in my head.

From the start of my build to the time I showed the car at Sema was the best accomplishment I have ever had.

Originality is the key when I was building my FRS, I wanted to change everything to make it unique to my liking. Everything from exterior, Interior, Engine/Performance to wheels. So what did I do, I sat back and made a list of everything that I wanted to do to the car. Every upgrade, every custom part and even down to the color of the decals I wanted.

The first steps were easy, it was some cosmetic work and such as installing Seibon carbon fiber parts to the body to make it look more in depth to a show car. Every time I thought about suspension work I was undecided between Static or bags not knowing the bagged lifestyle I wasn’t so sure if that was the right first steps to go. But I took a chance. With my car being a show only vehicle I wanted to have the best fitment that could be possible.

After the Minimal steps were done I figured it was time to totally redo the interior. This is where JPM Coachworks came into play. With them having such a big representation in the Upholstery field, I figure they were one of the best shops to go with. This had me completely stripping my whole interior and sending it half way across the country. But in the end it was worth it. The custom stitched Sparco Evo lll seats make the whole interior. I couldn’t be any happier with the work.

With the FRS coming from the factory with a 2.0L Boxer FA20 I knew the power would have to change. Nothing could be better than Huy at Inline Racing in Houston Texas building my built to park FRS with a custom turbo kit. Driving this perfect balanced car turboed after N/A is a completely different game. It is so amazing to drive a so light weight car with so much power down the street.

The last steps of my build couldn’t be any perfect. CVT Designs in Houston Texas couldn’t of made the trunk set up look any better with the beautiful work that they’ve done. Dual tank, dual compressor with custom copper hard line set up couldn’t have been a better choice, it really makes everything flow together.

My car has been majorly updated from start to finish ranging from carbon fiber, custom upholstery, performance and management, wheels, to the smallest little things you couldn’t imagine.

Every little detail matters to every car enthusiast, it doesn’t matter what kind of car it is. It just matters how share the whole scene and culture together. That is how the scene has become the way it has today. The car scene has become a Family and we have to grow together!

Throughout my whole build from start to finish it, from show to show, it really has changed my life. Not only just as a car enthusiast but as a person. Every detail of my car comes from the heart. Because if you didn’t build a car from your heart then it won’t look as perfect as you want it.

GT Channel FR-S for SEMA 2014

An FR-S concept car that isn’t widebody? That’s almost as rare as an unmolested 240SX. So what can you do to the FR-S besides slap a Rocket Bunny kit on it? GT Channel took the high road and decided to find out for their SEMA 2014 FR-S build.

GT Channel teamed up with legendary Japanese tuner Mine’s for the build, which is sort of cheating but since this was a contest between media companies and it’s all about publicity and building great cars on the FR-S platform, they get a pass. For the body kit, the understated but beautiful GT Channel FR-S uses an Espirit front lip, TRD sideskirts and a Seibon carbon fiber diffuser. The carbon diffuser is matched with a Seibon carbon hood and trunk. Wheels are 18-inch Volk Racing ZE40 with 265-widrth Bridgestone Potenza R11S tiresThe two-tone paint and bright blue accents give the FR-S a high tech look, sort of like the glowing emblems the Release Series 1.0 comes with.

GT Channel added an HKS GT supercharger along with an Unorthodox Racing crank pulley, a Ganador exhaust with 5Zigen straight pipe and a CSF Radiator. The KW coilover kit, along with supporting suspension mods, was tuned by MotoIQ.

SEMA 2014 – Scion FR-S T1 Targa Isn’t A Convertible, But It’s Halfway There

Scion’s FR-S Targa SEMA 2014 car gives us new hope for multiple body styles in the FR-S. The FR-S Targa has removable center roof section (hence the name) rear window louvres that will hopefully make their way to the aftermarket and a widebody kit.

The FR-S T1 was built by Cartel Customs for Scion’s SEMA booth and sits on KW Coilovers and forged 19-inch wheels. The targa top isn’t the only custom bit on the FR-S T1, it also has a custom widebody kit with a center mounted exhaust. It’s not all show either, a Greddy turbo kit has been installed along with a Wilwood big brake kit.

Like Bon Jovi said, we’re halfway there, woah-oh living on a prayer. We still don’t have an FR-S convertible (besides the original concept car), but the Targa shows that Scion wants more than just a coupe out of the FR-S.

An FR-S Targa isn’t a convertible, you can’t just toss a surfboard in and go to the beach and your back seat passengers won’t get much of a tan, but it would make the FR-S a closer competitor to the Mazda MX-5 Miata.

2nd Generation Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ Confirmed

The Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ have been confirmed for a second generation. The Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ have been hits for both companies, but the fate of the boxer engined sports car was in question, partially because of Toyota’s insistence on new body styles, a convertible model most importantly, and Subaru’s reluctance to build anything but the original coupe.

Now Toyota has confirmed that the 2nd generation of the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ (and the Toyota GT86 as it’s known in many parts of the world), citing the company’s need for sporty cars to rejuvenate its image.

“we are pretty serious about keeping the GT 86 pure and keeping a car like that in our line-up. Because in the past we dropped cars like the Celicas and fun cars, and we don’t want to lose that again,” said Karl Schlicht, Toyota of Europe’s Executive Vice President told Motoring.com.au. “It hurts the image over time, we want to keep some fun cars in our line-up.”

Despite recent unsourced reports to the contrary, the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ will live into another generation. This opens the door to the possibility of Supra built off the FR-S platform. Since Toyota is planning a higher end sports car with BMW power, it would be simple to build the FR-S platform with enough engine bay space to accommodate an in inline six (the current car has proven pretty accepting of larger motors, as all those 2JZ FR-S builds and V8 swaps have proven).

2015 Scion FR-S Suspension Upgrades Track Tested

2015 brings the biggest changes to the Scion FR-S since the car launched in 2013. In addition to the FR-S Release Series 1.0, which went on sale recently, the 2015 FR-S gets an upgraded suspension. Changes have been made to recalibrate the FR-S’ springs, struts, shocks and bushings for a more tight feel.

Automobile Mag took the 2015 FR-S to a track to see how these suspension tweaks affected the sports car’s handling at the limits. The FR-S’ tendency to get sideways has been dialed back, and it seems as though Scion has split the difference between the original FR-S’ tail-happy suspension and the Subaru BRZ’s more conservative understeering setup. The end result seems to be the fastest option of the three, and as a bonus, it rides even better than the alternatives.

Scion Release Series 1.0 Now On Sale, Costs $29,990

The Scion FR-S Release Series 1.0 is now on sale with a no-haggle price of $29,990. The Release series 1.0 is the first special edition of the FR-S, and comes with a couple TRD performance upgrades in addition to the usual visual accoutrements.

FR-S Release Series 1.0 models will come with a bright yellow paint job called Yuzu, as well as a full lip kit and HID headlight with LED daytime runners.

Inside, the Release Series 1.0 FR-S has a TRD steering wheel, TRD shift knob, unique black seats, a TRD logo cargo mat and a Smart Key with push button start.

A TRD cat back exhaust will add about 15 horsepower while a set of TRD lowering springs will stance the FR-S Release Series 1.0 while giving the already sharp handling car a bit more edginess.

What’s surprising is that this is the first special edition of the FR-S. Scion has released 10 xB Series editions and eight tC Serieses, about one a year. With sports cars, special editions push interest long into a model’s life (just look at Aston Martin and Porsche) so expect to see more special edition and Release Series FR-S models over the next couple years.

The Story Behind the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ

By now you already know the basics of the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ’s genesis – it has a Subaru engine and chassis while the styling was done by Toyota.  That’s not the whole story though, and X Car just released a video detailing the whole story behind the joint venture sports car.

The interesting part of the story is that it was Toyota that pushed for the car to be built.  Toyota decided they wanted to build a sports car with Subaru and went to the smaller company with the idea.  Subaru was hesitant about the project at first so Toyota took the initiative and built a prototype using an engine out of a Subaru Legacy.  The car came back to Toyota with bald tires and a resounding yes.

What followed was a bit of Romeo and Juliet style fighting over the details of the engine, but luckily Toyota and Subaru are not the Montagues and Capulets and nobody ended up stabbed or poisoned.

Scion FR-S SEMA 2014 Cars Announced

Scion is tapping the well of tuner knowledge for the 2014 SEMA show. Scion handed three 2014 FR-S models over to Speedhunters, GT Channel and Super Street (the magazine of note for every car loving kid growing up in the 2000s that is remarkably still kicking and still putting out good content {I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thought about buying a Civic and pouring money into it because of their magazine} ) to build for SEMA 2014.

All three car enthusiast-centered media channels received a Scion FR-S and $15,000 to customize it with, and all three will have to present their results at SEMA 2014 (I’ll officially appoint the winner to anyone who shows up 3/4 dead to SEMA and lies in their booth as a performance piece sleeping off the $35,000 hangover they afforded thanks to selling the car and spending the customization money). The winner of the 2014 Scion Tuner Challenge will get $10,000 (which will itself buy an exceptional hangover, plus you probably get to keep the car).

So far the builders have been mum on the details of their plans for the 2014 Scion Tuner Challenge, except for GT Channel announcing that they’ll be working with MotoIQ’s Mike Kojima for the build.
