Scion and Mackin Industries Race Pikes Peak in 500-HP FR-S

Scion teamed up with Mackin Industries for the 2015 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on June 28. Scion didn’t build this year’s car, but sponsored Mackin’s build of the FR-S, which has over 500-horsepower, along with Greddy and Evasive Motorsports.

Evasive Motorsports Dynoed the Pikes Peak 2015 FR-S and found 480-horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque on their Mustang Dyno. Not too shabby, and what’s even more impressive is that the build survived the 12.42-mile long Pikes Peak course that ends at 14,000 feet of elevation.

The FR-S was built with a Greddy turbo kit using a Garret GTX3076R turbo and a mean looking custom exhaust. The car was originally built for SEMA, so it’s not all go no show, the Mackin industries Pikes Peak FR-S also has a full Rocket Bunny widebody kit, Rays wheels with Toyo tires and of course a fully built suspension for the Hill Climb.

Official race results have not been tabulated yet due to a mixup on race day that involved two different checkered flags at different places on the course. Organizers say a decision has been made regarding official times and final results for the race are forthcoming (as of July 7).

Ken Gushi Takes The D1 Drift FR-S to Pikes Peak

The Pikes Peak Hill Climb is one of the coolest races in the world. An old school Point A to Point B race, drivers start at the bottom of Pike’s Peak and race to the top. Whoever gets there fastest wins. Sounds easy right? Well, up until recently, the entire trip was on dirt roads and even with a fully paved course, the 156 turns over 12.42 miles with only 600 feet of air to cushion your fall if you step off course mean that only the most confident drivers are willing to push their cars to the limit there.

Scion D1 drifter Ken Gushi took on the Pikes Peak Hill Climb this year and while the team had some setbacks with the 2013 D1 car they used (nothing serious, just blew the motor on the car and had to overnight the spare, then had oil pressure issues on the spare), they successfully completed the race with a final time of 10 minutes, 30 seconds. That time was good for third place, not a bad showing for a drift driver.

Last year, Scion sent an FR-S, a tC and an xD rally car to the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. The 2013 Hill Climb was a bit more exciting for the drivers, the race ended in a hail storm at the top of the mountain.

Subaru BRZ Rally Car Wins Third Straight Race

A Subaru BRZ Rally Car Campaigned by Tein is heating up in the All Japan Rally Championship, winning three races in a row. The BRZ rally car, sponsored by Tein and driven by Kamata Takuma, just won the Tango Peninsula Rally 2014, the sixth race of the 2014 season.

The BRZ rally car competes in the JN-5 class, so it isn’t going up against the Subaru Impreza WRX STI and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. Instead, the BRZ competes with other 2WD vehicles like the Honda Integra, Mitsubishi Mirage, Honda Civic, and even a couple Toyota GT86s.

The Tango Peninsula Rally is 63.6 miles (or 4.02677e6 inches according to my coffee-deprived first conversion) split up into 21 stages. Both rain and heat were a factor in the race but the BRZ handled the wet gravel well thanks to its balance and low center of gravity.

It still looks like Toyota will campaign a GT86 rally car before Subaru races a BRZ rally car, but this shows the car’s potential.

Scion FR-S Rally Car Ready To Hit The Dusty Trail

Since the Subaru BRZ became Subaru’s most exciting car (cue the granola spit-take from the Outback fanclub) people have been wondering if we’d ever see a BRZ rally car. The BRZ Cross Sport was a tease at possible future plans for more subaru-y BRZs, but nothing has materialized. Now it looks like Scion will build an FR-S rally car before the Subaru BRZ rally car comes to life. The Toyota GT86 CS-R3 will actually make it onto rally stages this year.

Toyota is building a rally GT86 to serve as a recce car (a prerunner for rally races if you’re more familiar with Baja terminology or are better at figuring words out using context when they’re in English). The GT86 rally car will scout the course ahead of the actual race for the pace notes, but Toyota plans to use the scouting recce cars as a precursor to a WRC car.

The Scion FR-S rally car will have mild performance modifications to give it between 237 and 246-horsepower, as well as a rally sequential gearbox.

Can You Drive The Scion FR-S In The Snow?

It’s been a while since there were many affordable rear-wheel drive sports cars for sale, so you can be forgiven for your misgivings when it comes to how the Scion FR-S does in the snow.

Snow driving an FR-S on a well packed, empty road is obviously a day pass to snow drifting fun, pretending you’re fighting for first place in a rally circuit.  That’s well and good, but what about doing the mid-snowstorm slalom around plows backing out of driveways without looking and stuck goofballs who left the 24s and summer tires on their Escalades with zero visibility?

Throw in a few performance upgrades that we all know every FR-S has like a new air intake or exhaust and the little car will be even more eager to break the rear end loose.

The Car Guide drove a Scion FR-S recently during a snowy Montreal winter and said that while there were some issues accelerating properly (partially attributed to worn out winter performance tires), the FR-S’ ability to drift effortlessly on snowy roads  made driving in the snow fun. The stability control made keeping the FR-S under control during snow driving the FR-S easy when it was on. The FR-S’ visceral feel was also praised even in icy conditions, and proves that a truly good sports car won’t get tiresome even when out of its element.

Watch an 800 Horsepower 2JZ Scion FR-S Drift the Oregon Trail

I can’t think of a better way to travel the Oregon Trail than with an 830-horsepower drift car.  You can keep your oxen and your fording rivers, the only part of that game that was any fun was the hunting anyway.  Ryan Tuerck took his Formula D Scion FR-S to the Maryhill Loops Road, aka the Oregon Trail hill climb track (don’t worry it’s closed to the public, so you won’t see an 800-horsepower Formula D car chase a minivan full of school children off the road), to do some drifting.

Tuerck raced up the mountain sideways alone, then tackled the track downhill in tandem with another drifter, Rob Primo.

Tuerck’s formula D Scion FR-S is powered by a stroked 2JZ-GTE engine, the venerable powerhouse from the Supra.  The 2JZ engine swap is popular, Scion is entering a factory backed 2JZ Scion FR-S into this year’s Formula D.

Subaru Cross Sport is a Rally Ready BRZ Hatchback

Subaru has revealed it’s latest wild custom concept based on the BRZ. The Subaru BRZ Cross Sport shooting brake is a hatchback version of the BRZ coupe. Along with the hatchback that adds more room to the BRZ’s small interior, the Cross Sport has a higher ride height(either from a suspension lift or larger tires, Subaru hasn’t said) and beefy fender flares that look ready to absorb any debris that might result from a spirited drive off the beaten path.

The Subaru BRZ Cross Sport’s might be the perfect BRZ rally car. The BRX hatch’s higher ride height would provide more ground clearance for rough roads. That higher ride height would also give the BRZ hatchback more room for essential rally gear like skid plates and chassis reinforcements. The one thing the BRZ has always lacked that set it apart from the rest of the Subaru family is all-wheel drive. The BRZ cross sport hatchback could have enough room for Subaru to finally build an AWD BRZ.

It’s not just the extra ride height and the possibility of all-wheel drive that makes the Cross Sport a perfect BRZ rally car. Some rally drivers prefer the hatchback models of the WRX over the sedan ones because the extra weight of the hatchback bodystyle is all over the rear wheels, giving the cars better balance. The Subaru BRZ hatchback could have an even better weight distribution than the 54/46 the BRZ coupe has.

Toyota GT86 CS-R3 – Toyota Builds a BRZ Rally Car

With Subaru’s racing and performance reputation built on rally championships, it seemed strange that the company would team up with Toyota to build a sports car for the street. The BRZ’s front engine, rear wheel drive configuration is incongruous with the dirt spitting image Subaru has cultivated, so the question loomed: when would a Subaru BRZ rally car show up? Surprisingly, Toyota beat Subaru to the punch with the first rally car built off of the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ platform.

Toyota Motorsport GmbH has announced a GT86 CS-R3 rally car that will be available through the customer motorsport program. To fit in with R3 specifications, the GT86 rally car will have a six speed sequential gearbox, a limited slip differential upgraded brakes and a more powerful engine.

Customers will be able to buy the Toyota GT86 CS-R3 rally car in 2015. The Toyota GT86 rally car will be eligible for all FIA sanctioned rallies including the world Rally Championship. Subaru has not announced a BRZ rally car, but even if it isn’t official, it doesn’t stretch the imagination to picture someone swapping a few body panels and competing with a Subaru BRZ rally car in the WRC.

TOYOTA Motorsport GmbH (TMG) is proud to announce it will develop a GT86 R3 rally car as part of its customer motorsport programme.

The rear-wheel drive sports car will be converted to R3 specification and made available to private competitors, with delivery expected for the 2015 season.

The car, which will be known as the TMG GT86 CS-R3, will be built according to R3 regulations, meaning it will have a six-speed sequential gearbox, limited slip differential, modified engine, adapted brakes and other upgrades.

Drawing on the experience of developing the TMG GT86 CS-V3 race car for the Nürburgring-based VLN series, TMG engineers will modify the base car to the maximum level permitted within the regulations.

The TMG GT86 CS-R3 is targeted at private customers and is eligible for all FIA-sanctioned rallies, up to and including the World Rally Championship. Full specifications and pricing will be announced in the coming months.

Today’s announcement strengthens TMG’s commitment to customer motorsport and rallying, both of which represent key aspects of its long-term business strategy.

With a Yaris R1A already launched plus the ongoing development of a Global Race Engine, TMG is expanding and strengthening its knowledge of rallying and drawing on its proud history in the sport.

TMG’s very existence is founded on rally, having begun life in Cologne in 1979 as Toyota Team Europe (TTE). Under Ove Andersson, the company went on to win four drivers’ and three manufacturers’ World Championships.

Racing by TMG: The customer racing arm of TOYOTA Motorsport GmbH (TMG) is identified by the “racing by TMG” logo, which encompasses race and rally projects designed exclusively for private participants. TMG returned to the world of customer motorsport in 2012 with the launch of the Yaris R1 entry-level rally car, while the same year saw the introduction of the TMG Customer Sport V3 (CS-V3) race car. That car won its class in the Nürburgring 24 Hours and forms the basis of the expanding TMG GT86 Cup, run within the Nürburgring-based VLN series.
