Watch an FR-S Hot lap The Nurburgring Nordschleife

The Nurburgring’s Nordschleife is one of, if not the, most famous tracks in the world. It’s so important that sports car makers use it was part of their advertising to show how fast their car is along with 0-60 times, 1/4 mile times and top speeds. So of course you want to see an FR-S whip around the Nordschleife and absolutely kill it.

The Toyota GT86 (this is Germany, they don’t have Scions there) absolutely dusts a few BMWs (including one turd that won’t let him pass) that almost definitely have a few horses on him, an Audi that looks pretty nice, and a few hatch backs. If you needed any more proof that the FR-S and BRZ are awesome sports cars, no matter the comparatively wimpy engine, this is it.

The GT86 is owned by RSR racing rentals and is completely stock except for better tires and brake pads.

Scion “Went Down Swinging,” But FR-S Convertible Will Not Be Built

We’re going down, down in an earlier round and sugar we’re going down swinging

The FR-S convertible is dead. Scion fought for the car and despite Subaru’s veto, Toyota was planning to manufacture the car itself, but there was no market outside the United States that could anticipate sales high enough to justify production.

“So on the convertible we went down swinging,” Scion Senior Vice President Doug Murtha told WardsAuto. I think we were pretty aggressive on our (submitted plan), but we looked at what we would have conceivably lost on the product and said, ‘We’re not going to even push it further.Nobody was more disappointed than we were.”

Scion FR-S sales have been declining steeply, which is to be expected when a car has been around for a couple years, so Scion is looking for something to get buyers interested again. It won’t be a turbo model though, according to Murtha “that’s not something that’s coming.” That technically leave the possibility of a 2.5-liter FR-S though, so there’s still hope for more power For now, Scion is banking on the Release Series 1.0 reawakening the public’s love of the car, or maybe they’ll actually build the FR-S Targa

The car dealers that were shown the convertible FR-S as an incentive to keep their Scion branches open must feel awful, like they were dealing with a company that didn’t care about honesty at all and would say anything to keep them around longer, hoping that the more time they invested, the less likely they were to walk away. So now they know how it feels.

Chew Are Going To Love The Stay Minty FR-S

Custom cars are a purely passionate endeavor. There is no rational reason to spend thousands of dollars on aesthetic mods to a car, nor performance upgrades on a car used for the daily commute, but there is a particular type of person that is still drawn into the expensive, frustrating, unjustifiable and unreciprocated love of cars and against the odds finds happiness there.

Passion can only exist in the absence of reason, and so as car lovers we have to applaud when someone forgoes all reason and delves irrationally deep into the world of customization.

Kendall White is one of those people. He clearly has a passion for his car that goes beyond the simple pleasure of having a good looking automobile in his garage. The owner of the Stay Minty FR-S isn’t a wealthy car collector who had the car built on a lark, he works 6 months away from home at a time to afford his Ahabian quest for the perfect FR-S.

Case in point: I asked Kendall for a little bit of information about himself and the car and his mindset with the build and he sent me back this awesome, expansive story. In addition to building an awesome FR-S, he makes the writer’s job easy. What better way to learn about someone than in their own words?

My name is Kendall White, I was Born and raised in a small area around Taberville Missouri. Don’t try and look for it on a map because you probably won’t find it (laughs). With being from a small town I have a lot of respect for everything that I deal with. Not only do I give respect I get respect in return for being so young in a community that worships custom car builders such as myself. When I was a boy, I started my life out having dreams just like every other small child does. But I felt like my dreams were different. Every time I turned around I found myself into something automotive. It came from a family aspect judging by the preferences that they had in their dreams, I look back and they were all in to cars also. So I do believe my family history had to do a lot with it.

The beginning of my automotive loving days was when I turned seven years old. Not only because of hot wheel cars like everyone else but when I had first got a hold of my first copy of car and driver magazine. That was a big part of my childhood Memory. Imagining myself building and driving the most amazing car’s that there were back in the 90s. Didn’t matter if it was drift, rally, or even stock car racing the point is I was hooked. From then on out I found my calling.

Throughout school it was hard to decide what I wanted to be in life. I had various jobs, such as farming, Industrial and retail, but at that time I was never really interested in anything like that. In Missouri where I was from its very hard to find a job that you can make enough money to build your dream car. From there I decided to join a company that was something new to my liking. It was an oil field job that my family has worked at for decades. Not knowing what I was getting myself into. I went ahead and started right away. Working away from home 6 months at a time is a very hard task to take on but I did it anyways. From My first day at Work up until now I have accomplished a lot. Even my self-saying that I believe it. My career has relocated me to Lumberton Texas where I have settled down and have taken my custom car building to an all-time high.

*In today’s Scene we have multiple types of vehicles, people and personalities. Anywhere you look competition is everywhere. Not like it was when it first started.

*From day one of making my mind up on buying a new concept of vehicle like the Scion FRS I knew I had the build planned before I even sat in the driver’s seat.

June 2012 was a special time of year for me, I pre ordered my Firestorm Scion FRS. I was absolutely excited to see what this new concept of vehicle would be like. With me pre ordering an FRS so early in the year I had to wait Six weeks for it to be delivered, which was the longest wait ever. I still can’t believe that I actually put money down on a car that I never even seen before in person (laughs). It was down to the point where I was calling once a week to see if the dealership knew where it was located at. Six weeks waiting the day was finally here, the dealership called and told me that my car was there to pick up. Was one of the most exciting days ever. My first time approaching the car was a moment to remember. The body lines were perfect for what I was planning on doing with the car.

So the build starts

Knowing that I wanted to build something so perfect into the best show car possible to the best of my ability. I knew that I would have to custom build and design everything. Knowing that a lot of cars were planning on going wide body. I wanted to keep it original, with that being said I wanted something that wouldn’t be overly done but just right. With the FRS body lines you have so much style you can work with. But then again, like I said not overly done. Building a perfect Built to park vehicle is not easy. But I knew I was going to make it easy. At least that’s what I had in my head.

From the start of my build to the time I showed the car at Sema was the best accomplishment I have ever had.

Originality is the key when I was building my FRS, I wanted to change everything to make it unique to my liking. Everything from exterior, Interior, Engine/Performance to wheels. So what did I do, I sat back and made a list of everything that I wanted to do to the car. Every upgrade, every custom part and even down to the color of the decals I wanted.

The first steps were easy, it was some cosmetic work and such as installing Seibon carbon fiber parts to the body to make it look more in depth to a show car. Every time I thought about suspension work I was undecided between Static or bags not knowing the bagged lifestyle I wasn’t so sure if that was the right first steps to go. But I took a chance. With my car being a show only vehicle I wanted to have the best fitment that could be possible.

After the Minimal steps were done I figured it was time to totally redo the interior. This is where JPM Coachworks came into play. With them having such a big representation in the Upholstery field, I figure they were one of the best shops to go with. This had me completely stripping my whole interior and sending it half way across the country. But in the end it was worth it. The custom stitched Sparco Evo lll seats make the whole interior. I couldn’t be any happier with the work.

With the FRS coming from the factory with a 2.0L Boxer FA20 I knew the power would have to change. Nothing could be better than Huy at Inline Racing in Houston Texas building my built to park FRS with a custom turbo kit. Driving this perfect balanced car turboed after N/A is a completely different game. It is so amazing to drive a so light weight car with so much power down the street.

The last steps of my build couldn’t be any perfect. CVT Designs in Houston Texas couldn’t of made the trunk set up look any better with the beautiful work that they’ve done. Dual tank, dual compressor with custom copper hard line set up couldn’t have been a better choice, it really makes everything flow together.

My car has been majorly updated from start to finish ranging from carbon fiber, custom upholstery, performance and management, wheels, to the smallest little things you couldn’t imagine.

Every little detail matters to every car enthusiast, it doesn’t matter what kind of car it is. It just matters how share the whole scene and culture together. That is how the scene has become the way it has today. The car scene has become a Family and we have to grow together!

Throughout my whole build from start to finish it, from show to show, it really has changed my life. Not only just as a car enthusiast but as a person. Every detail of my car comes from the heart. Because if you didn’t build a car from your heart then it won’t look as perfect as you want it.

Better than a Ski Lift – Ryan Tuerck Drifts Up a Ski Mountain in His White Widebody FR-S

They’re boring (you can only spend so long staring at a trail before you really just want to play on it and it drives you crazy) and high enough up that you get a nice cooling breeze (perfect for those 15 degree days on the mountain). Ryan Tuerck has a great alternative: drifting his sick white FR-S up the mountain to the top, probably beating the ski lift’s time in the process too.

Check out this video of Tuerck solo drifting up Burke Mountain in northern Vermont (it’s so far north I bet they call Canadian bacon “bacon” there) and then going up together with BC racing teammate Pat Goodin with his 2JZ 240SX.

Finally a fun alternative to a ski lift, let’s petition Burke mountain to hire a team of FR-S drifters to take skiers to the top.

2015 Subaru BRZ GT300 Race Car Revealed at Tokyo Auto Salon

The Tokyo Auto Salon is one of the largest car shows for Japanese brands. Both aftermarket and OEM suppliers go all out for the Salon every year, and Subaru is no exception. This year, Subaru unveiled the 2015 Subaru BRZ GT300 race car, which will compete in Japan’s Super GT series.

The BRZ GT300 race car is barely recognizable as a BRZ. It’s wide (it makes the Rocket Bunny kit look like a Tango), it’s low and it has a massive spoiler on the back. Still, it’s a lot better than the NASCAR bodies that are essentially all the same with different headlights and grills painted on. At least the BRZ GT300 looks like it started out life as a BRZ.

Subaru also debuted their WRX STI based race car that will be competing in the Nurburgring 24 Hour race with grill mounted lights that make the front of the car look like a Mustang (head over to Autoblog to see the monstrosity and then try to tell me you don’t see the stang in it).

Subaru will use the same Dunlop tires on the BRZ GT300 and the Nurburgring 24 Hours STI.

 

Scion FR-S Lightning McQueen Edition Will Make You The King of the Schoolyard

Here’s how I know this guy loves his kid more than my dad loved me: he turned his FR-S, a sexy red sports car, into Lightning McQueen. If my dad had really loved me, the family Jeep would have been replaced with a red sports car just like this one. But instead all I got was a bad skin and an abandonment complex.

Ryan Lee from Speedworks Engineering built his FR-S into lightning McQueen with some custom vinyl so that his son could be the coolest kid in school. Oh and the FR-S is turbo with 300-hp, so it’s got that going for it too.

This is the single coolest modification you can make to your FR-S, forget your Rocket Bunnys and your 2JZ swaps. You’re a fool if you don’t copy this guy. Unless you don’t have kids. if you don’t have kids, don’t do this. You’ll just end up having to try to explain it to the police and then introducing yourself to your neighbors for the rest of your life.

Wider is Better – KM4SH Widebody Kit From Miura and Speedhunter Is a Cleaner Rocket Bunny

Speedhunters has teamed up with Kei Miura, the designer of the Rocket Bunny widebody kit for the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ, to create a new widebody kit for hachiroku owners. The KM4SH (Kei Miura for Speed Hunters) kit is much less extreme looking than the Rocket Bunny, and the subtlety works for the FR-S.

If you’re looking to go wide without going wild, the KM4SH kit, which was on the Speedhunters 2014 Scion Tuner Challenge car, is a great looking choice.

So now there’s the Rocket Bunny, Rocket Bunny V2, ML24 widebody kit, and the KM4SH kit, or if you can’t afford any of them, the Rocket Bunny FR-S scale model.

Super Street Builds a Stanced Widebody ITB FR-S for the 2014 Scion Tuner Challenge at SEMA

Super Street built an awesome widebody FR-S for the 2014 Scion Tuner Challenge at SEMA that takes all the ingredients popular in tuning right now – stance, crazy engine customization, widebody (which will never go out of style) and combines them into a delicious gumbo.

Super Street was the only entrant into the Tuner Challenge to keep the FR-S Release Series 1.0 paint scheme intact, GT Channel went with a gorgeous two-tone silver and Speedhunters painted theirs white with retro stripes. In addition to the bright yellow paint, which is actually PPG Speed Yellow, not Kudzu Yellow, the Super Street FR-S has Rocket Bunny fenders (V1 in front and V2 in rear) with the screw pockets shaved for a cleaner look, Aeroflow side skirts, front splitter and fog light delete, Seibon carbon fiber trunk and hood, and Bulletproof Automotive x Crystal Eyes taillights. Wheels are 18×10.25 and 18×12.25 FLOSS EDITION BBS LMs with 275-width front and 295-width rear Nittos.

The engine has been outfitted with Borla Induction 45mm DCOE individual throttle bodies with 70mm velocity stacks, a fuel rail, 1000cc injectors, and a MOTEC tune. The engine bay has been completely shaved and all accessories hidden, which makes the FA20 boxer look really special.

The stance comes from KW Clubsport coilovers, an Eibach rear camber kit, Whiteline front & rear sway bars with two point mounts, Whiteline front control arms, and a Whiteline roll center and bump steer kit. The FR-S got a Wilwood 6-piston front and 4-piston rear big brake kit.

Inside the Super Street FR-S has Recaro CS seats, a Personal steering wheel, a custom stereo with 12” subwoofers, and a 6 point Godspeed roll cage.

If you’re a male (or a cool female) between the ages of 25 and 35, you may remember Super Street as THE go to drooling magazine for import cars. No matter what cheap Japanese car your parents agreed to buy you when you turned 16, Super Street at some point showed you some kind of awesome lambo-doored monstrosity you could build it into (my 93 corolla was going to have suicide doors, flames with textured paint so they looked wet all the time and a Camry V6, it got none of those things). The magazine of note for pimply faced Jesse from The Fast and The Furious wannabes (be honest, he was the only one you could identify with) knows a little bit about show cars, and it shows.

Speedhunters Builds Retro Race Car for SEMA Scion Tuner Challenge 2014

Speedhunters lived up to their name with the Scion Tuner Challenge build for SEMA 2014, building a track ready race car out of the FR-S. The Speedhunters Scion Tuner Challenge FR-S is a widebody racecar with a full roll cage, supercharger and more.

The Speedhunters FR-S has a Cosworth Stage 2.0 supercharger, Delicious Tuning ECU tune, an Airaid intake, Raceseng air conditioner delete, shaved engine bay and wiring harness, a CSF radiator, JDL header, and a 3” single exit exhaust.

For the exterior, the Speedhunters Scion Challenge FR-S got Speedhunters’ own KM4SH fender flares with shaved screw pockets for a cleaner look, Charvonia design fender vents and rear diffuser, custom front diffuser. For the race car look, the FR-S also got a side window glass delete, shaved door handles, shaved mirrors replaced with old school fender mounted mirrors. Seventeen inch Rotiform BLQ wheels keep up the retro theme.

Full RS*R Black-i coilovers, SuperPro front and rear sway bars, sway bar stiffening plates and SPC Performance rear lower control arms give the Speedhunters FR-S handling to match the engine performance. A Wilwood big brake kit with 6 piston front and 4 piston rear calipers and 12.88” rotors will stop the car like brick wall.

Since this is a SEMA car, the Speedhunters FR-S isn’t just a stripped out race car inside. The interior upgrades to the FR-S aren’t completely barebones: custom leather trim from JPM Coachworks, shaved seatbelt mounts and airbag test from Charvonia Design, custom door panels and dashboard, Takata harnesses (the import scene is going to have to come up with a new #basic harness to install in every car), a Cusco 4 point roll cage, custom low back seats, a race steering wheel, and vintage Indycar pedals and footrest.
